St. Laurence Catholic SchoolThe curriculum at St. Laurence School is built around the core of Religion, Reading, and Mathematics. Religion is not just taught out of a book, it is learned on the playground, at the Church, and in the lunchroom. The students know that God loves them, and they can return that love by serving God by loving one another. We’re talking high standards! The school’s philosophy can be summed up as: Be the best that you can be. Our reading program is designed with that philosophy in mind. We teach a balanced approach that combines sounding out words and using whole language techniques. The students learn that reading is not the end but a means to an end. That end is to use reading as a platform for learning about this marvelous world with all its diversity and wonders. Mathematics is just one of the ways in which students come to understand this wonderful world around them. The students in pre-school and the early grades become familiar with numbers, shapes, and patterns. In the middle grades students at St. Laurence can learn to use numbers to solve problems and use patterns to learn their math facts. In the upper grade students put shapes, patterns, and numbers together to solve problems and integrate math with science. In math as with reading students are encouraged to be the best they can be and, keeping that in mind, students will progress at their own rate.

In addition to those core subjects, St. Laurence has a strong approach to the Language Arts. Younger students are encouraged to “make books” and read them to their classmates, teachers and parents. Yet bookmaking continues through the upper grades as students write stories, reports, and presentations. The school uses the six-trait writing model and Step Up to Writing approach for a framework to improve student writing. Handwriting, spelling, and vocabulary provide the rest of the language arts curriculum.

St. Laurence teaches social studies, science and health at all levels. Starting at the lower levels where students learn about community helpers, good hygiene and the natural world around them and moving on up to the higher grades where students participate in the State Geography Bee, Science Fair, and History Day competitions.

On top of all that, St. Laurence Schools has a top-notch music program, physical education three times a week, art once a week taught by a local artist in the community, and a Spanish teacher who provides instruction weekly.

Holidays 2010 at St. Laurence School

Saint Laurence School Laramie WyomingThe holidays started on December 4th when the choir performed that afternoon at the Happy Holidays, Laramie! celebration at the UW Art Museum. The St. Laurence String Quartet also played a couple of Christmas selections. The talk of the celebration was the huge Christmas mural put together by art teacher Jennifer Howdeshell that included works from the students from Kindergarten through sixth grade. Later that night the students climbed aboard the Home and School Association’s float in the Downtown Christmas Parade.

The next weekend the parish celebrated December 12th Our Lady of Guadalupe with a dinner at the school. The highlight of the afternoon was a re-enactment of the story of Juan Diego performed by the upper grade students from the school.

Saint Laurence School ProgramsOn the sixteenth of December the school held its Annual Christmas Program. This year’s program was entitled: Christmas Around the World. Each class portrayed a different country as sixth grader Elizabeth Alvarez portrayed the peasant women Babushka as she searches the world for the Christ Child. Colt Johnson pulled everything together as the Narrator. The program started with a reading of Luke’s Gospel delivered by the students in Spanish, German, Polish, Mandarin, and Slovenian.
